Economic and Social Benefits of Experience Aviation

- EA encourages youth to pursue careers that will benefit them, their communities, the aviation and aerospace industries, and the U.S. economy.

- Thousands of American youth, many from the inner city with typically high minority populations, have no real career path or realistic aspirations for a financially satisfying professional life.

- Those who are talented in sports may see an athletic scholarship as their only route to higher education, as Barrington himself did before he met his mentor, Captain Robinson.

- For many inner city athletes, there are clearly defined paths and support systems to get them from high school to the pros. However, there are no defined paths to success leading to aviation-related careers--such as becoming a pilot, engineer, air traffic controller, sales-agent, dispatcher, mechanic, technician, flight attendant, environmental compliance coordinator, or customs agent.

- Until they enter the EA program, most of these youth don’t realize that career fields in aviation and aerospace are even possible in their own backyards and that the industry is in dire need of a new generation of workers.

- Students taking part in EA programs learn and realize that aviation is a rich, growing industry that needs new talent. There is already a shortage of pilots, air traffic controllers, engineers and others whose knowledge base is in the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math). The average age of engineers is 54.

- The shortage of skilled workers in aviation and aerospace is likely to continue as more and more workers retire.

- By attracting more youth to these fields, EA will be helping the U.S. economy.

- The FAA and other professional organizations run educational programs to attract youth, but they don’t have the “star power” of a role model like Barrington, nor hands-on experiential and inspirational training. Young people can relate to him because he started where they are and because he managed to overcome what most people would consider overwhelming odds.
